Course Overview

Planning to work as a duty manager in charge of liquor sales? Licensing laws have recently changed – complete this essential short course to make sure you comply! This is a mandatory course for anyone who wants to work as a duty manager in charge of a liquor store, supermarket, café, restaurant, nightclub, bar, community or sports club.

With a range of start dates throughout the year, this popular seminar develops a working knowledge of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012. It acts as a vital pathway to the Licence Controller Qualification and the General Manager’s Certificate.

This is an intense, three week course that comprehensively covers government legislations on the sale and supply of liquor. You'll need a good level of comprehension to succeed.

The Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 was fully implemented in December 2013, replacing the Sale of Liquor Act 1989. The effects of these changes are fully explained during this seminar.

This course is a pre-requisite for anyone wishing to apply for their General Managers Certificate (administered by district licensing agencies).

You'll gain two NZQA unit standards - 4646 and 16705 - to prove your knowledge of the law and your responsibilities as a host.

You'll then need to apply to ServiceIQ for your Licence Controller Qualification and upon receipt can apply to your local regional authority for a General Manager's Certificate. (Note: you must be 20 years or over to obtain a General Manager's Certificate).

Course Entry Information

Entry criteria

There are no minimum academic requirements (open entry), however you must be a minimum of 20 years old at the time the course is undertaken in order to obtain a General Manager's Certificate.

Standard Entry Criteria

Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.

Other Considerations

You must have:

  • access to a computer and the internet to complete the online theory component of the course.

English language requirements

Level 4 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
