Michelle McGregor teaches hairdressing at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Mokoia, Rotorua campus.
She joined our institute in 2024 and teaches the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist) (Level 4) programme.
With more than 20 years of experience in the hairdressing industry, Michelle has worked across a range of salon environments, developing sought-after skills in cutting, colouring, and client care. Before moving into tertiary teaching, she spent three years working at a specialist school, strengthening her understanding of diverse learner needs and inclusive teaching practice.
In the Toi Ohomai salon, Michelle says ākonga (students) learn fundamental hairdressing skills, such as cutting, consultation, and professional practice before moving into more technical styling and colouring techniques. She describes her teaching style as hands-on and supportive.
“Learners can expect a real, team based salon environment that prepares them for industry… I like to demonstrate first, then guide learners as they practise, to help build their confidence and skills. My own learning experiences have shaped this approach, as I believe people learn best when they feel safe and supported,” Michelle says.
Michelle says hairdressing offers a strong and rewarding career pathway because it’s people-centric, practical, and creative.
“There are a wide variety of opportunities within the industry, as the craft continues to evolve with new trends and greater inclusivity. The best part of teaching is seeing learners grow in confidence and skill and watching them move into the industry feeling capable and proud of what they’re achieving professionally.”
