Construction management involves the supervision and management of construction sites to achieve the successful completion of a contract on time, on budget, and to a high standard. If you’re good with people and a clear decision-maker, this course could be right for you.

This course is open to students already working in the construction industry. It has been designed to further extend your construction knowledge while working around your work commitments.

There is the right balance of applied theory and problem-solving skills to grab the construction management jobs that are popping up all over the country.

Year 1 – Foundations (Level 5)

  • Introduction to Construction – Learn the fundamentals of the construction industry, including roles, processes, and project stages.
  • Materials and Structural Principles – Understand how construction materials and structural systems perform in building projects.
  • Environment – Explore environmental impacts, sustainability, and how site conditions influence construction.
  • Services – Learn how building services (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) operate and integrate into construction projects.
  •  Construction 1 (Residential) – Study residential construction methods, materials, and building systems for small-scale projects.
  • Law and Contracts – Gain an understanding of construction law, contracts, and legal responsibilities in projects.
  • Measurement 1 – Learn how to measure quantities from drawings and prepare basic schedules for construction work.
  • Estimation – Develop skills to estimate project costs and prepare basic pricing for construction projects.

Year 2 – Advanced Practice (Level 6)

  • Construction 2 (Commercial) – Expand into commercial construction, including larger buildings, systems, and methods.
  • Financial Administration – Learn how to manage project finances, budgets, and cash flow throughout construction.
  • Procurement – Understand how projects are sourced, tendered, and awarded in the construction industry.
  • Programming – Develop skills in planning and scheduling projects to ensure efficient delivery.
  • Planning and Quality – Learn how to manage quality systems and ensure projects meet required standards.
  • Site Management – Gain practical skills in managing construction sites, teams, and day-to-day operations.
  • Method Statements – Learn to develop safe and effective construction processes and work procedures.
  • Regional Project (Construction Management or Quantity Surveying) – Apply your skills to a real-world project, focusing on either construction management or cost planning.

Student Loans and Allowances

This course meets the requirements for student allowance and student loan applications through StudyLink.

  • A student loan helps to pay for your course fees (the compulsory fees), study materials e.g. books, equipment, and living costs. You'll have to pay this money back.
  • A student allowance is a weekly payment that can help with your living expenses while you're studying. You don't have to pay the money back.

Course Entry Information

Entry criteria

To be admitted to this course, applicants must meet the following general admission requirements:

  • NCEA Level 2 including mathematics and NCEA Level 1 including Literacy OR;
  • A relevant qualification at NZQCF Level 4 or above or a recognised equivalent  

Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or over and has not reached the standard admission requirements is eligible for Special Admission.

Flexi-learn Delivery

In addition to the above you must already be working in the construction industry, and have a reasonable level of experience and the support of your employer.

You’ll be invited to an information meeting. This is your opportunity to find out more about the course content and to make sure you're on the most appropriate course for your career aspirations and current level of experience.

Standard Entry Criteria

Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.

English language requirements

IELTS Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 with the Academic Endorsement or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
