This week, Toi Ohomai had the privilege of welcoming Hon. Penny Simmonds, Minister for Vocational Education, to our Windermere campus in Tauranga - a meaningful moment as we evolve with the changing landscape of vocational education in Aotearoa.

The Minister’s visit follows her July announcement confirming that ten Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics, including Toi Ohomai, will transition to independent status on 1 January 2026. For Toi Ohomai, this marks a return to local governance and a renewed focus on serving the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato region.

Minister Simmonds was joined by Sam Uffindell MP, Tom Rutherford MP and Western Bay of Plenty Mayor James Denyer.

During her time at Toi Ohomai, the Minister met with the Toi Ohomai Executive Leadership Team, Leith Comer Toi Ohomai Community Advisor and members of a newly formed Establishment Advisory Group, chaired by Deryck Shaw, with Roana Bennett and Christa George. This group will guide the transition for Toi Ohomai back to independence, supporting the appointment of a new Chief Executive, and helping to shape a governance model that reflects the needs of our communities.

Kieran Hewitson, Executive Director Toi Ohomai, acknowledged the significance of the visit, noting the Minister’s appreciation for the mahi of kaimahi across the sector and her confidence in Toi Ohomai to stand independently.

As Toi Ohomai looks ahead to its next chapter it remains committed to the communities we serve. We look forward to continuing our work in the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato and building on the rich history of vocational education across the rohe.

We are continuing to work with stakeholders to identify the workforce development needs of the region and the role that Toi Ohomai can play in responding to those needs by providing ongoing, relevant education and training.

The Minister’s visit was a strong endorsement of the direction of Toi Ohomai and recognition of the progress made. With the EAG in place and foundational work underway, Toi Ohomai is well-positioned to thrive as an independent institution once again.
