Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology has welcomed Te Wānanga o Aotearoa to Pūkenga Rau, Tokoroa’s central education hub, marking a collaborative approach to regional vocational education in the South Waikato.

The partnership brings together Toi Ohomai and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa supported by SWIFT (South Waikato Investment Fund Trust), South Waikato District Council, and Raukawa, with a shared commitment to providing accessible, locally based education pathways for Tokoroa and surrounding communities.

Speaking at the event, Toi Ohomai Chief Executive Dr Pim Borren noted the significance of this moment, saying, “I have heard the word kotahitanga mentioned many times this morning. It is especially meaningful this week as we recognise Te Tiriti o Waitangi across the nation on Waitangi Day and the founding document of this nation.”

The collaboration follows confirmation of targeted strategic funding from the Tertiary Education Commission late last year which has enabled Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) to maintain the provision of vocational education in regions where it is strategically important. This has allowed Toi Ohomai to continue delivery at its regional campuses, including Tokoroa.

Working closely with local MP Louise Upston, South Waikato District Council, and regional stakeholders, the focus has been on ensuring equitable education outcomes for learners.

“Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is excited to partner with Toi Ohomai in the best interests of the community we jointly serve,” says Evie O'Brien, Te Kura Toroa - Chief Executive.

"The presence of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa at Pūkenga Rau reflects a commitment to working alongside partners who share a vision for strong, locally connected education pathways. The move signals a continued focus on regional access and learner success in the South Waikato."

Clive Somerville, representing the South Waikato Investment Fund Trust, welcomed the collaboration, saying, “This is about supporting the long-term prosperity of South Waikato. It’s encouraging to see these organisations coming together, and I’m excited about the future of our district.”

Raukawa representatives led the proceedings and expressed strong support for the partnership. Speaking on behalf of mana whenua, Charlie Tepana acknowledged the longstanding relationship both institutions have with the community. “Today is about our rangatahi and the wider community -creating opportunities for people to learn together, locally, and within our rohe,” he said.

Toi Ohomai and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa are looking forward to welcoming the first cohort of students on to Pūkenga Rau in the coming weeks.
