Dean joined Marine Studies in 1994. Although he spends more time on the paperwork side of things now, Dean looks forward to working in the field with students.
He teaches Marine Vertebrates (Level 5), Freshwater Ecology and Monitoring and Coral Reef Ecology and Monitoring (Level 6), as well as Marine Surveying.
He holds a Master’s in Freshwater Ecology from the University of Waikato, is a qualified boat skipper and also a PADI Master SCUBA Diver Trainer.
Areas of research that he's interested in include tropical reef fish and invertebrates, characteristics of the little blue penguin population at Mount Maunganui, freshwater invertebrates as monitoring tools for stream quality, rainbow trout seasonal distribution in the Tarawera River, and coral reef fish of the Kavieng Province in Papua New Guinea.
