Logan Crawford
The Bay of Plenty’s top apprentice builders have been recognised, with one Tauranga tradesman taking home the region’s top title.
Logan Crawford, of JBH Builders, was named the Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay 2026 Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year.
Georgia Rendall of Oswald Construction in Rotorua was second, with Ross Pirie of Oceanside Builds third.
Crawford, who trained through Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, impressed judges by combining practical knowledge with a genuine willingness to keep learning.
His submission explained how his project came together, including the sequencing of work and the use of materials and methods less common in traditional timber-frame construction.
Judges said a site visit was a standout part of his assessment, as Crawford confidently explained his role in the build and the lessons he had learned.
Rendall, who also competed in last year’s awards, was recognised for her strong construction knowledge and clear understanding of her work.
Judges praised her confident communication, problem-solving ability and progress since the 2025 competition, noting organisation during the practical challenge.
Pirie impressed judges with his understanding of project planning, health and safety requirements and structural challenges on site.
He was also commended for the leadership skills he was already showing, including helping to run projects independently and contributing ideas on site.
The Apprentice of the Year competition is in its 23rd year and recognises emerging talent across the industry.
Master Builders chief executive Ankit Sharma said the competition provided an important opportunity to recognise apprentices who were building strong foundations for their careers.
“As our sector continues to evolve, skilled apprentices remain at the heart of delivering the high-quality homes and buildings New Zealand needs.”
Sharma said Apprentice of the Year allowed emerging builders to demonstrate their practical ability, and the professionalism, knowledge and leadership developed throughout training.
“It is encouraging to see such strong talent coming through the industry, and the standard displayed throughout this year’s competition gives us real confidence in the next generation of builders and our future industry leaders.”
Ninety-five apprentices from nine regions competed in this year’s regional events across New Zealand.
Competitors were required to submit details of a building project they were working on before completing a two-hour practical challenge.
The top 10 apprentices in each region faced an interview with judges and an on-site project assessment that tested their technical knowledge, communication skills, project involvement and wider understanding of the construction industry.
Crawford will represent the Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay region at the national finals at The Cloud in Auckland from October 7 to 9.
The national winner will receive a Carters Career Advancement Grant and the use of a new ute for one year.
