From Foundation to Future

When Rebecca Swartz realised traditional schooling no longer suited her, she discovered that a foundation course at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology could help her explore her career interests, opening the door to a future in beauty therapy.
“My mum works at Toi Ohomai, and she encouraged me to explore what the Polytech had to offer,” Rebecca recalls. “After visiting the campus and sitting in on a few classes, I knew I wanted to enrol.”
The Level 2 Foundation course helped Rebecca explore her career interests through practical exercises and hands-on experiences. This led to her continuing with the Level 3 Skincare and Makeup course, followed by the Level 5 Diploma in Beauty Therapy.
“We looked at our top three interests, and beauty therapy really stood out for me,” she says. “During the practical week, I got to try the Level 3 Skincare and Makeup class. Seeing how the students worked and even getting my makeup done gave me a real taste of the industry.”
Like many students, Rebecca faced challenges along the way and was pushed out of her comfort zone, ultimately growing from the experience.
“I had to learn to use my time wisely, especially when classes finished early,” she explains. “Practising makeup or studying during those gaps made a big difference.”
Rebecca says one of the main benefits was the supportive learning environment.
“Our tutors were amazing. They spent time with us every day and gave us practice papers that correlated the exam content,” she says.
Mock exams helped Rebecca prepare for assessments. One standout moment from Rebecca’s time at Toi Ohomai was a class trip to the Polynesian Spa.
“We wanted to experience the beauty industry from a client’s perspective,” she says. “Our tutor challenged us to plan it ourselves, so we fundraised by offering $10 back massages. It taught us so much, including teamwork, marketing and event planning.”
Through the Level 5 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Rebecca gained advanced skills in skin analysis and treatment planning.
“I learned how to assess complex skin conditions and use technologies like microdermabrasion and electrotherapy,” she explains. “It’s not just about doing treatments, it’s about understanding the client and designing a plan that works for them.”
Rebecca’s short-term goal is to work in a professional salon or spa, but her dream is to open her own business.
“I want to learn everything I can about running a salon. Eventually, I hope to create a brand that reflects care, quality, and confidence.”
She also hopes to inspire others. “I want to show that with hard work and dedication, you can grow from an entry-level therapist to a successful salon owner, no matter your age.”
For those considering a similar path, Rebecca says to go for it.
“Every challenge is worth it. The growth you’ll experience is incredible, and the relationships you build will shape your journey. Studying at Toi Ohomai has made a lasting impact on my life, and it can for you too.”
