Ākonga and Ākonga Māori Success
Despite Aotearoa New Zealand’s vocational education sector going through significant change over the past five years as part of the Review of Vocational Education (ROVE), course success rates at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology increased in 2023 and 2024.
This study aims to understand what factors contributed to course completion rates rising to 84% for all Toi Ohomai learners and 78% for ākonga Māori in 2023.
The research team examined completion statistics from 2019 to 2023 and chose eight programmes with good overall ākonga and ākonga Māori success to investigate in greater depth.
The group examined Programme Self-Assessment Reports (PSARs), conducted interviews with kaiako in each teaching team, and facilitated focus groups with current and past ākonga to identify factors that may have contributed to this success.
The team analysed the qualitative data to identify common themes, initially in each of the eight programmes, then sought to identify commonalities across all.
