Tangatarua Marae Bookings

Tangatarua Marae is available for bookings. Whether you're planning a hui, workshop, wānanga, or community gathering, the marae offers a welcoming and culturally rich space for your event.

Booking Process

  1. All booking requests are to be submitted via our online booking request
  2. Our Kaitiaki Marae will review and confirm availability of the marae and your request
  3. If the marae is available, a deposit of $200 is payable to confirm your booking. This is non-refundable should you decide to cancel. (unless extenuating circumstances apply, for example, tangihanga).
  4. Full and final payment for your booking is due no later than 21 days prior to your scheduled arrival date
  5. Once full and final payment is received, the initial booking deposit of $200 becomes your refundable bond.
  6. In the event of cancellation by the hirer prior to receiving final payment an administration fee will be charged. If a cancellation is actioned after receiving full payment the initial booking deposit is forfeited.
  7. For confirmed bookings, a Marae representative will meet with the hirer at the Marae at an agreed time.     

Tangatarua Marae Costs (all figures are GST inclusive) 

In fulfilment of the moemoeā (vision) of students who, in 1983 requested the establishment of a marae at the (then) Waiariki Polytechnic, and in line with the kaupapa of Tangatarua Marae, there is no charge for internal student-related, bookings. 

Costs for other groups are as follows:

Afternoon (12pm-5pm)  $400 ($200 deposit)
Evening (5pm-10pm) $400 ($200 deposit)
Full day (8am-5pm)  $600 ($200 deposit)
Day and overnight  $700 ($200 deposit)

Confirmation of Marae Booking

You are required to become familiar with the Tangatarua Marae Hireage Manual. Your signed agreement with the procedures in the manual, is a condition of your booking.  Failure to abide by the regulations in the manual may result in a deduction of the bond (to cover cleaning services and/or the replacement of broken equipment).

Some kaupapa covered in the manual include:

  • Pōhiri guide
  • Marae check in and check out processes
  • Heating for the wharenui, wharekai and ablution block
  • Health and safety rules (e.g. smoke free, vape free, alcohol free and drug free)
  • Permission to take photos and video footage
  • Security
  • Marae cleaning
